All Mercenary Troop Special Abilities

We here at the Hub love Mercenary Troops! Their special abilities give the game an added ounce of fun, balance, and competitive edge. That’s why we took the time to list out every mercenary troop single special ability.

This article will go over all Mercenary Troop special abilities, the type of special material you need to train them, as well as your Mercenary Fighting Pit level requirements in Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire.

Getting the Most Out of Your Mercenaries

It should go without saying that you want as many of your Mercenary Troops as possible to live through every battle. The Mercenary Commander's Gear Set is a good choice for equipment that gives all of your mercenary troops a decent Attack, HP, and Armor bonus.

If you are training Imperial Frigates, you can’t do any better than the Magitek Alpha Gear Set, which gives generous HP and Attack boosts to Airships and Magitek. Since the Imperial Frigate falls under both categories of troops, using Magitek Alpha gear set will make your Imperial Frigates fast, tough and deadly.

When using any Samurai troops, be sure to craft yourself a Genbu Kabuto helmet. Its +500% Samurai HP and +650% Mercenary Armor will surely help with the longevity of your Samurai.

Whether defending your Empire, a Realm Tile, or the Crystal, if you are using Guardians, then pieces from the Guardian gear set are for you. Specifically the Guardian Fortress armor (+602% Troop Armor, +185% Guardian HP) and Guardian Bulwark accessory (+649% Guardian Armor, +40% Attack Resistance). The only problem with the Guardian gear set is that some of the boosts it gives will only affect your Guardians and provides very little in the way of attack, which is why trap players often suggest using Undertaker's Gear Set instead.

For the crafty gamer on a budget, you can effectively reduce the cost of items used to train mercenaries using Aranea’s Mercenary Cost skill, allowing you to get more bang for your buck. Keep in mind that Aranea needs to be your active hero in order for this skill to take effect.

Mercenary Troop Special Abilities

Each mercenary falls under a specific category, allowing them the gain bonuses for both Mercenaries and their respective troop type.

Guardians

All Guardian troops are considered troop tier T0. As such, they go to hospital beds first. If the attack fills your beds they will be moved out to make room for higher tier troops, and die. Guardians are weak vs Airships.

City Guardians (Requires Guardian Shields)

  • T5 Troop Equivalent in defense and health. T1 Equivalent in attack

  • Dies before Frost Guardians and Crownsg

Frost Guardians (Requires Guardian Shields)

  • Dies after City Guardians and before Crownsguard

  • Five Times the HP of T5 Troops.

  • Immune to  Armor Piercing.

Crownsguard  (Requires Guardian Shields)

  • Dies before all troops, but after City Guardians and Frost Guardians.

  • Three Times the HP of T6 Troops.

  • Instant Healing Time when sent to Hospital.

Dragoons

Dragoons are some of the fastest troops thus far. They do incredible damage vs Magitek, but when it comes to regular combat against Warrior, Mage & Calvary, there are better mercenaries to choose from. Use Aranea to power-up your Dragoon's Attack and HP.

Dragoon Raider (Requires Dragoon Kit)

  • T5 Troop equivalent in regular combat.

  • Five times damage vs Imperial Magitek troops.

  • Five times the March Speed of T5 Troops.

  • Five Times the Troops Load of T5 Troops.

Aranea’s Elite Dragoon (Requires Aranea’s Dragoon Kit)

  • Can only be trained after unlocking Aranea.

  • +1,000% Attack & HP from Aranea.

  • Ten Times the March Speed of T5 Troops.

  • Fifteen Times the Troops Load and War Spoils of T5 Troops.

  • Five Times damage vs Imperial Magitek troops.

 Raiders

Raiders emphasize speed above all else. Their Attack, HP and Armor varies from one troop to the next, but Raiders are not made for combat per se. That doesn't mean they can't take a hit, or dish them out, but when you're looking for a troop to march a long distance, Raiders are hyour go-to. Thus far, all Dragoon mercenaries are also Raider type troops. Raiders can also be weak to Calvary if Advanced Combat Research is completed.

Chocobo Raider (Requires Raiders Harness)

  • Seven times the March Speed of regular troops.
  • No longer available.

Killer Bee Raider (Requires Dragoon Kits)

  • T6 Troop equivalent.
  • +300% Attack Bonus vs Gaurdians, when Killer Bees outnumber Guardians
  • +600% Attack Bonus vs Guardians, when Gaurdians outnumber Killer Bees
  • Two times the Combat Effectiveness vs Gaurdians
  • Five times the Combat Effectiveness vs Imperial Magitek
  • Five times faster than T6 Calvary.

Airships

All Airships are strong vs Guardians. When facing an opponent that is well-defended with Guardians, a full march of Airships along with Ignis' Airship Attack, HP & Armor skills will be your best offense. Airships can also be weak vs Mage if adequate Advanced Combat Research is completed.

Steelwing Airships (Requires Airship Fuel)

  • Five Times damage vs Guardians.

  • Two Times damage vs Traps.

  • Five Times the March Speed of T6 Siege.

  • +500% Attack vs opponent marked with Battle Marker.

  • Four Times the March Speed of T5 Siege.

Magitek

Magitek come in many shapes, forms and troop types. Look for equipment and items that give combat bonuses to your Magitek mercenaries and the battle will be yours.

  • +500% Attack Bonus when fighting in Crystal, Scar & Titan.

Juggernauts

Once known as the "game-breaking troop," Juggernauts were previously capable of burning any level empire with just one troop. They have since been scaled back for a better balanced game, but they can still pack a punch – if you can afford enough of them! Juggernaughts are strong vs Warrior, Mage & Calvary, but very weak vs Siege Engines. Use Prompto's hero skills to give these pricy mercenaries +800% Juggernaught Attack & HP.

Catoblepas Destroyers (Require Juggernaut Plating)

  • One Hundred Times the Attack & HP of T5 Troops.

  • Double Attack & HP when fighting in the Crystal, Scar & Titan.

  • Three Times vs damage vs Warriors.

  • Two Times damage vs Mage & Calvary.

  • Three Times vs damage vs Warriors.

  • Two Times damage vs Mage & Calvary.

  • Deals more damage when there are more Catoblepas Annihilators included in a March.

  • Weak vs Siege.

Marauder

Marauders specialize in realm tile combat. That can mean kicking someone off of a tile to claim it for yourself, defending against would-be attackers who want your tile, or laying a trap on a realm tile in hopes that you might capture an opponent's hero. Marauders can be weak vs Warrior if the skill is researched in Advanced Combat Research. Aranea's expanded hero skills will make sure your Marauders are prepared for combat.

Reapertail Marauder (Requires Raiders Harness)

  • T5 Troop equivalent in regular combat.

  • Triple the Attack of T5 Troops on Realm Tiles.

  • Nine times the Attack of T5 Troops vs Siege on Realm Tiles.

  • Triple the Gathering Speed of T5 Troops.

  • Triple the March Speed of T5 Siege.

Gatherer

Like their name inplies, Gatherer troops specialize in gathering on resource and loot caches, but are pretty much useless in combat.

Chocobo Caravan (Requires Caravaners Saddles)

  • +300% Gathering Speed

  • +300% Troop Load

Aspidochelon Caravan (Requires Caravaners Saddles)

  • Ten Times the HP of T3 Siege when fighting on a Realm Tile.

  • Triple Gathering Speed of T3 Siege

  • Double Troop Load of T3 Siege

  • Four Times the March Speed of T5 Siege

Mech

Thus far, we have only seen one Mech type troop, although considering Ignis' new Hero Skills that are specific for Mech troops, it's safe to assume that more of these mercenaries are on the way.

Salvaged Mech (Requires Dynamo)

  • T5 Troop equivalent.

Conclusion

With new mercenaries arriving at the Mercenary Fighting Pits nearly every week, each additional troop brings with them new challenges and strategies. Don’t forget to include these special abilities of each mercenary troop in your overall attack strategy to give your empire the best competitive edge available.

City Guardians, Frosties and Crownsguard all get damaged in the same tier. Granted, you will probably lose considerably more City Guardians than Crownsguard, but they definitely take damage at the same time.
