In Final Fantasy XV, Tonitrus Lucis Caelum, aka the Fierce, one of the ancient King, known for his ruthless savageness and was feared as a veritable beast. He was friendly and cared for his subjects. He ruled as a king during Luci’s 2,000-year-old history. When he passed, his soul entered the Ring of Lucii, and his spirit also was created into a statue.

As the King of yore monument states:

“A valorous king who, with his unparalleled military might, won glory against his foes and defended his nation from harm. Though dubbed ‘the Fierce’ for his ferocity in the field, Tonitrus was also a compassionate king who cared deeply for his subjects.”

– King of yore monument

Noctis, the last of the Lucian lineage, embarks on a mission to collect the royal arms of his ancestors and acquires the Fierce’s mace. After obtaining Crystal’s Power, Noctis and his advisors return to Insomnia, where they approach the Fierce enslaved by Starscourge. The Fierce is finished off by Noctis’ friend Gladiolus who dual-wields his greatsword with Genji Blade to defeat him.

Now in FFXV: A New Empire, we can summon him to help us charge our opponents or defend us in our honor!

In this guide, we will cover:

  • Quick review about Conclave of Lucis
  • Tonitrus Skill Tree/Sigil Chart
  • How should we skill him?
  • Somnus vs. Tonitrus

Let’s summon Tonitrus into the Conclave of Lucis!

Conclave of Lucis

Tonitrus requirementsThe Conclave of Lucis requires a building unlock. As of now, it still only achievable from the Gold Store. Once opened, you can summon the spirit, similar to how you summon the Astrals and Mounts.

To unlock this summon, he requires a level one Conclave of Lucis and 100,000 Tonitrus Empowerment Sigils.

Once the mightly King is summoned, he will provide passive boosts to your Troops. You do not send him in a march, so do not fret. If you are defending your Empire, the Crystal, Tiles, you name it. He is there for you! The same goes for attack mode.

The Summoning Power will dictate the strength of your spirit. Each of the spirits will have its own Summoning Power, again just like the Astrals and Mounts. The higher the Summoning Power, the better your attack and health stats will be.

Tonitrus

Tonitrus

The second of the bloodline available for us to summon in Final Fantasy: A New Empire! Remember (yes, some of us forget, don’t judge!) to summon him to activate his boost. Conclave of Lucis DOES NOT provide multi summon defense so you must pick which one works better for you.

Keep in mind, if you are not using him outside of your Empire, just like Astrals and Mounts, he is standing alongside with them defending in your honor. He specializes in City Assault and comes with ample attack bonuses for your Dark Cavalries, Airships, and your Fire Troops.

Tonitrus Empowerment SigilsHe will require Tonitrus Empowerment Sigils and currently maxes at level 50 as well.

Check out the Sigils chart below!

When unlocked, he will come with three Skill Points right out the gate; however, he is leveled locked, so choose where to place your points wisely! I will make a note of the requirements as we get into his Skill Tree to provide some insight on that so you can better prepare yourself and save the time of having to reskill it even though it’s’s free. Just remember that as we go down the tree, that you need to add up the Skill Points required, so you do not sell yourself short.

Let’s break down his Skill Tree to see what benefits he can bring to you and your Empire!

Tonitrus Empowerment Sigil Chart

Tonitrus Sigil Chart

How should I skill him?

First things first, Summoning Power is very similar to Rank for Mounts, because of that, prioritize that initially. That will be the most crucial one to skill. It will help you in any situation you are in. Then you want to look into Tonitrus stats himself to beef him up, after all, he is going to be fighting for you.

When balancing your Empire, be sure to use the stats that will benefit you in multiple situations, such as Astrals, Mounts, Mercenaries, and Elementals. Magical Core Supplies would be beneficial in this case as well.

Dark Airships and Attack Core Supplies are mainly for attacking Empires/Neutral Cities, and if you plan to have Glauca and his gear, then boosting your Cavalries will give you an excellent advantage.

How does he compare?

Since we cannot use both of the King of Luci ancestors that are released, we have to pick and choose which one works better for us for our gameplay. Also, let’s see what Tonitrus looks like at level one compared to Somnus at level 50, so we can analyze where he starts becoming more powerful than him.

Somnus Level 50 vs. Tonitrus Level 50

Somnus Dark Troop stats:

  • 80B% Dark Troop Attack
  • 40B% Dark Troop HP
  • 120B% Dark Troop Armor

Tonitrus Dark Troop stats:

  • 675B% Dark Troop Attack
  • 50B% Dark Troop HP
  • 150B% Dark Troop Armor

Okay, I am pretty sure I do not even need to elaborate on the comparison above. It says it all.

Somnus Level 50 vs. Tonitrus Level one

Somnus level 50 Dark Troop stats:

  • 80B% Dark Troop Attack
  • 40B% Dark Troop HP
  • 120B% Dark Troop Armor

Tonitrus level one Dark Troop stats:

  • 118B% Dark Troop Attack
  • 17.5B% Dark Troop HP
  • 52.5B% Dark Troop Armor

As you can see above, Tonitrus at level one already has more Dark Troop Attack than Somnus at level 50. Even though it does not have more in terms of Dark Troop HP and Armor, but it almost has half of its stats!

Somnus and Tonitrus differences

Somnus assist your Dark Earth, Warrior, and Juggernauts while Tonitrus benefits your Dark Fire, Cavalry, and Airships. He also grants you an additional 5% Summoning Power when defending your Empire.

Somnus Dark Earth, Warrior, and Juggernaut stats:

  • 150B% Dark Warrior Attack
  • 75B% Dark Warrior HP
  • 225B% Dark Warrior Armor
  • 100B% Dark Juggernaut and Earth Troop Attack
  • 50B% Dark Juggernaut and Earth Troop HP
  • 150B% Dark Juggernaut and Earth Troop Armor

Tonitrus Dark Fire, Cavalry, and Airship stats:

  • 475B% Dark Cavalry and Airship Attack
  • 80B% Dark Cavalry including Airship HP
  • 240B% Dark Cavalry along with Airship Armor
  • 650B% Dark Fire Troop Attack
  • 150B% Dark Fire Troop HP
  • 450B% Dark Fire Troop Armor

Conclusion

Tonitrus is pretty powerful almost right out the gate in comparison to Somnus in some areas. However, they both do have their distinct qualities. It would be interesting to test them both side by side in a defensive sense since Somnus has more defense capabilities when Tonitrus has more numbers overall.

Have you tested them both out for comparison? Show us in our Line or Discord channels so we can see!

Here are a few notable tips to acknowledge when coming to an end of this guide:

  • Summoning Power will dictate the amount of health or attack your spirit will inflict.
  • To unlock the second summon, you need the Conclave of Lucis and 100,000 Tonitrus Empowerment Sigils.
  • You cannot use both of the summonses at once, so it is vital for you to choose what is best for you based on your gameplay.
  • Tonitrus specializes in Dark Cavalry, Airships, and Fire Troops.
