Cactuars are back! This time, they are no longer rocking those sexy Santa Hats, but they haven’t lost that “come hither” stare. Now you can use Cactuars in your Monster Farm. We know that you want one of these cute cacti critters to call your own, but find yourself on the receiving end of a Cactuar’s attack and you’ll end up in a prickly situation.
This article will show you how to obtain the Cactuar in the Monster Farm, discuss the different types of Cactuars that are available to hatch, and compare the Cactuar to the other monsters in the Monster Farm.
Cactuar Monster Farm Boosts
Cactuars give us a boost that we don’t see often throughout the game – Armor Shredding. In fact, the only other place we see Armor Shredding is on a level 100 Prompto Hero Skill.
As with many of the new monsters in Monster Farm, the quality of Cactuar Egg you hatch will determine the type of Cactaur you get and its boosts. The table below outlines each type of hatchable Cactaur and their corresponding boosts.
|NAME||BOOST||EGG TYPE||HATCHING STONES||HOW TO GET IT|
|Toxic Cactuar||+5% Armor Shredding||Cactuar Egg||3,000||Dropped by Cactuars, Cactuar Egg Chest|
|Forest Cactuar||+5% Armor Shredding||Cactuar Egg||3,000||Dropped by Cactuars, Cactuar Egg Chest|

Unlocking the Cactuar in Monster Farm
In order to use Cactaur-type monsters in your Monster Farm, you must upgrade the building to level 7. If you need to upgrade your Monster Farm, you can find Monster Farm Blueprints in the Forgotten Archives and the Adventurer Guild Hall, from the special Monster Farm dungeon in Proving Grounds, and in pack that appear by clicking on the upgrade in Monster Farm, clicking Monster Farm Blueprints that appears in red text, then clicking Get More.
If your Monster Farm is level 6 or below, is it worth upgrading to level 7 just to unlock the Cactuar? If you are a player who attacks a lot, then absolutely. At Monster Farm level 7, you can also access the Master Tonberry and their deadly Cripple HP skill. Shred Armor and Cripple HP are two of the most debilitating enemy debuffs in the game. As long as you can gain access to a Cactuar or Master Tonberry monster, it is definitely worth upgrading your Monster Farm to use either of these.
Armor Shredding Explained
What are the specific uses for a Cactuar’s Armor Shredding ability, you ask? To understand how to best use a Cactuar monster, we first need to understand how Armor Shredding works.
Unlike Armor Piercing, Armor Shredding reduces all of an opponent’s total Troop Armor boost. Meanwhile, Armor Piercing is an ability that reduces your opponent’s Troop Armor by your Armor Piercing boost. The two may seem similar, but are dramatically different on the battlefield.
For example, say you are using the Legendary Cactuar, which gives an Armor Shredding bonus of 15%, and you have an Armor Piercing boost of 500%. If you are attacking an opponent who is wearing Guardian gear and has a Troop Attack score of 5,000%, then Armor Shredding will reduce your opponent’s Troop Armor by 15% of that, bringing it to +4,250% Troop Armor. After Armor Shredding takes effect, that is the number from which Armor Piercing deducts 500%. So, that opponent who started with +5,000% Troop Armor now has +3,750% Troop Armor when your Troop Attack is applied.
Armor Shredding isn’t always this effective. If your opponent has +2,000 Troop Armor, then that Legendary Cactuar will only reduce that armor by 300%. In situations like this, you would be better off using a Monster that gives an attack bonus, such as the St. Patrick’s Jackpot Goblin.
To keep things simple, just remember that Armor is always shredded before it can be pierced. We will let you come up with your own mnemonic device for that.
Although its specific uses are situational, the Cactuar’s Armor Shredding ability is certainly a handy tool for any offensive player to keep in their toolbox. If you are close to Monster Farm level 7, then consider upgrading to hatch your Cactuar and start ripping through your opponent’s Troop Armor.
